German Engagement Day 2026 will focus on current and future issues related to civic engagement and volunteer work. Through discussions with experts from civil society, government, business, and academia, the event will address the framework conditions, protections, and new opportunities for civic engagement. On the first day of the event, participants can propose their own topics during a Barcamp. Much of the program is also available online.

What is it about?

German Engagement Day 2026 will focus on the framework conditions for civic engagement and volunteer work. The event will center on current challenges, protection, innovation, and collaboration between civil society, the government, and the private sector.

Who is it for?

Volunteers and individuals from nonprofit organizations, associations, and initiatives.

What will be covered?

Experts from civil society, government, the business sector, and academia will discuss current trends in civic engagement. On the first day, a Barcamp will round out the program, allowing participants to propose their own topics for two-hour sessions.

What will you take away from it?

You’ll gain insights into current debates and trends surrounding civic engagement and volunteer work. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore questions related to creating favorable conditions, protection, and collaboration across different sectors of society.

Organization & Participation

The event will take place at the GLS Campus Berlin, Kastanienallee 82, 10435 Berlin. Much of the program will be available online. A personal invitation will be announced in early November. The event is organized by the Federal Chancellery and the BBE.

Bundesnetzwerk Bürgerschaftliches Engagement (BBE)

The kickoff event marks the start of the 22nd Week of Civic Engagement. The focus is on this year’s theme, “Shaping the Future Together.” You can look forward to a panel discussion, examples of civic engagement, and the “Marketplace of Togetherness.” The event will take place at the Representative Office of the Free State of Thuringia to the Federal Government in Berlin.

Landesnetzwerk Bürgerengagement Berlin (LNBE)

The event addresses racism and discrimination in volunteer work among migrants. It will present qualitative research findings and the perspectives of migrants involved in volunteer work. The focus will be on barriers to volunteerism, the implications for democratic participation, and possible courses of action. Afterward, there will be time for exchange and discussion.
