A strong and diverse culture of volunteerism has developed in Pankow. Numerous children, teenagers, and adults volunteer, contributing not only their time but also their creativity, experience, and sense of responsibility. In 2001, the Pankow District Assembly of Berlin established the Pankow Volunteer Award to highlight and honor the achievements of these many individuals. Children, teenagers, and adults, as well as initiatives or groups, who volunteer selflessly and without personal gain for the common good may be nominated for the Volunteer Award. Nominations must be supported by a written statement. A jury consisting of district council members from all political parties decides on the award recipients.
