The award honors individuals and groups who actively promote tolerance, humanity, freedom, and democratic values . It recognizes efforts that contribute to raising awareness about the Holocaust and anti-Semitism—for example, in schools, colleges, organizations, or civic initiatives. The Margot Friedländer Prize aims to highlight efforts that strengthen democracy and break down prejudices. The prize money is intended to enable recipients to continue and expand their work.

Individuals, initiatives, school projects, and nonprofit organizations based in Germany that are committed to the award’s goals may apply or be nominated. The award is presented in three categories:

• the Margot Friedländer Personality Award for individuals who exemplify humanity and tolerance through their attitude and extraordinary commitment;
• the Margot Friedländer Project Award for initiatives dedicated to the themes outlined in the call for entries;
• the Margot Friedländer School Award for the commitment of students and schools in line with the call for entries.

An independent jury chaired by Elke Büdenbender, a lawyer and the wife of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, will select three winners. The prize money is to be used to support the continuation of their efforts. The award ceremony will take place on October 12, 2026, in Berlin.
