The Second Workshop: Feedback That Makes a Difference

What should a platform that truly supports volunteer work in Berlin look like? We explored this question in March 2025 together with ten volunteers. In an in-depth focus group, we gathered feedback on structure, funding, spaces, and design. The results help us continue to align engagiertes.berlin with the needs of Berlin’s civil society.

The idea of creating a central hub for volunteer opportunities was very well received. Above all, one thing was important to the participants: up-to-date and reliable content . A good overview isn’t enough—the information must be accurate and kept up to date.

What was requested:

• A calendar with a reminder feature for grant application deadlines
• Easy ways to provide feedback and suggestions
• Opportunities for the community to get involved

The idea of a grant finder generated a lot of interest. But the challenges often begin after the search is over: Submitting the application is the real problem.

Key issues:

• Many grants are difficult to understand in terms of language and format
• The effort required to apply is often unclear
• Different eligibility requirements are confusing—especially for new initiatives

Possible solutions:

• Filters by funding type, target group, deadlines, and effort required
• Clear topic keywords, guidance on documents and requirements
• Simple guides (“grant hacks”) to help newcomers

The discussion showed that space is a key issue —perhaps even more important than financial support. Small clubs and groups, in particular, need places to meet, plan, and hold events.

What was requested:

• A digital directory of venues with photos, categories, and pricing information
• Filters for amenities, accessibility, noise levels, and type of use
• Information on legal requirements (e.g., insurance, taxes)
• The ability for the community to rate venues (“Tested & Recommended”)

The idea: a venue finder that not only provides information but also offers support.

The platform’s design was also a topic of discussion. Participants wanted a clear and understated design that inspires trust—not too playful, but not too cold either. A blend of two design approaches that combine warmth and structure is the most well-received option.

The workshop confirmed that:

• The platform will primarily help new volunteers and small organizations
• Community engagement is crucial for relevance and timeliness
• Topics such as spaces and orientation are even more important than anticipated
• Tools must be accessible and practical —not only digital, but also easy to understand
