About 800,000 Berliners volunteer—that’s nearly one in three people in the city. Whether in a sports club, a neighborhood assistance program, or an environmental project: Without this commitment, Berlin would not be the vibrant, diverse, and supportive city it is today. To visibly recognize this commitment, there is the Berlin-Brandenburg Volunteer Card.
What is the Volunteer Card?
The Volunteer Card is a joint initiative of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg. It is intended for people who are particularly active in volunteer work—without any pay, but with a great deal of time and dedication. The card offers discounts at over 250 partner locations, including museums, recreational facilities, movie theaters, and local businesses.
New: The Volunteer Card is now available in digital form
Since 2025, the Volunteer Card has also been available as an app. A pilot program has already begun in Brandenburg. With the app, volunteers can conveniently use their Volunteer Card on their smartphone or tablet. Applying for and renewing the card will also be easier. As before, the card is valid across state lines in Berlin and Brandenburg. State Secretary for Digital Affairs Dr. Benjamin Grimm comments: “With the launch of the app, we are now also strengthening volunteerism through digital means.”
Who is eligible to receive the card?
The following requirements must be met:
- You are active in Berlin or Brandenburg.
- You’ve been active for at least one year.
- You must volunteer at least 200 hours per year.
- You do not receive any compensation for your volunteer work—except, possibly, reimbursement for expenses.
- You plan to continue your volunteer work in the future.
There is no legal entitlement to the Volunteer Card—it is a voluntary recognition provided by the states.
How do I apply for the Volunteer Card?
You must apply through the organization with which you are involved. The organization will verify whether you meet the requirements.
