The award recognises exemplary commitment against racist discrimination and violence . It honours people and groups who take responsibility, show civil courage and stand up for respectful coexistence.

Individuals and groups who are active in Berlin or Brandenburg can be nominated. Both long-standing voluntary work and courageous intervention against discrimination or violence are honoured.

The award recognises commitment to democracy, respect and peaceful coexistence. It honours people who actively oppose racism and exclusion and raises public awareness of civil courage in everyday life.

The Ribbon for Courage and Understanding has been awarded since 1993. The award is backed by an alliance of charities, trade unions, churches, youth associations and other organisations.
